Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
Foxes are medium-sized, meat-eating mammals and are native Britain. They are rusty red with a white belly, black ear tips and a big, bushy tail. Males are usually bigger than females.
Habitat
Foxes live in many different habitats, from woodland to open fields. The fox is also common in towns and cities.
Behaviour
Foxes hunt at dusk, though in cities they are active at night. They live alone and each fox has its own territory . They nest in dens, which may be numerous in their own territory and are connected by tunnels.
Feeding
Foxes eat mice, voles, rabbits, birds, eggs, frogs and fish. They also eat dead animals, and in urban areas, they will scavenge on human rubbish. T hey also eat insects and plant material, especially blackberries, apples and plums. When food is plentiful foxes hoard extra food for times when food is scarce.
Breeding
Foxes mate between December and January, with the females giving birth to a single litter. I n autumn of the same year, the young foxes will leave their parents and claim their own territories.
