Grey Squirrel (Sciurus caroliensis)

Grey Squirrels are small rodents with long, bushy tails. They have grey fur with white bellies. They are native to North America and have been introduced to Britain, and have since spread across the country. They have overtaken our native Red Squirrel, because they larger and stronger and eat their food. Grey Squirrels also carry Parapoxvirus, a disease that kills Red Squirrels.

Habitat
Grey Squirrels live in woodlands and parklands, especially where oak trees are present as acorns are one of their favourite foods.

Behaviour
Grey squirrels build nests on large tree branches and in tree hollows, and are lined with leaves, bark, moss or grass. They are most active at dawn and dusk. They are fast and agile to avoid predators, such as foxes, hawks, owls, weasels, cats, and dogs.

Feeding
Grey squirrels eat plant material, especially nuts and acorns.

Breeding
Grey squirrels mate from December to June, and have two litters a year usually with 3 babies. These are able to breed after 8 months.
