Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus)

Willow Warblers closely resemble Chiffchaffs, with an olive-green back and head and paler bellies, but they are slightly larger and have longer wings. They are most easily distinguished by their simple, yet evocative song that heralds the start of spring.

Habitat
Willow Warblers nest in young woods, scrub and along woodland edges.

Behaviour
Willow Warblers are migratory birds, spending their summers in Britain and their winters in tropical Africa. Although they occasionally flick their wings and twitch their tail they are less restless than Chiffchaffs.

Feeding
Willow Warblers mainly feed on insects, such as flies, caterpillars, beetles and midges. They also eat spiders and feed on berries in late summer and autumn.

Voice
Their call is a sweet, simple huweet, very much like a Chiffchaff. Their song is series of soft whistles, rather like a Chiffchaff’s song but much sweeter.
