Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula)
Bullfinches are small birds with a bulky head and stubby black bill. They have grey bodies, black wings and tail, and a white rump. The adult males have red bellies, but females and young birds have grey-buff bellies.
Habitat
Bullfinches prefer woodlands, but also live in hedgerows and scrub. They visit parks and gardens, especially in spring to feed on flower buds.
Behaviour
Bullfinches are very shy and stay in thick cover to avoid potential predators. They build nests in bushes, scrub or trees where the females lay 4-7 eggs.
Feeding
Bullfinches mainly eat seeds and buds of fruit trees, and were once considered as pests in orchards.
Voice
Their call is a beautiful soft pur pur... Their song is soft, hesitant and rarely heard.
