Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla)

Blackcaps are common and widspread, and breed throughout northern Europe. They are grey and males have a distinctive black cap on their head. Females have a brown cap. They are one of our very best songsters.

Habitat
Blackcaps are found in woodlands, parks and gardens with large trees. In winter they regularly visit garden bird feeders, especially from Christmas onwards.

Behaviour
Blackcaps build their nests in low shrubs where females lay 3–6 eggs. They are migratory, with birds spending their summer in northern Europe and their winter in southern Europe and northern Africa.

Feeding
Blackcaps eat small berries as well as insects. They are common garden visitors, feeding from bird tables.

Voice
Their call is a hard tak. Their song is a brilliant, fast and clear warble, which grows faster and louder.
