Blackbird (Turdus merula)

Blackbirds are one of our most familiar and common garden birds, with one of the richest, liveliest songs. Males are glossy black with an orange-yellow bill. Females are brown with a brown bill.

Habitat
Blackbirds live in woods, hedgerows, parks and gardens.

Behaviour
Most Blackbirds stay in Britain all year round, although some birds migrate here from northern Europe in the summer. These birds tend live in groups, whereas our residents are solitary and have their own territories.

Feeding
Blackbirds eat insects, worms and berries.

Voice
Their alarm call is a loud pik, pik, pik. Their song is slow, rich and melodic without repetition.
