Winchat (Saxicola rubetra)

Whinchats are small birds, similar in size to Robins. Males and females have brown backs, yellow breasts and white bellies. During the breeding season males have black heads, compared to the females which have pale brown heads.

Habitat
Whinchats live in grasslands with nearby bushes so they can perch.

Behaviour
Whinchats are migratory birds, spending their summer in Britain and their winters in sub-Saharan Africa. They nest among tall grass or in low bushes, with the female laying 5-6 eggs.

Feeding
Whinchats catch flying insects whilst on the wing.

Voice
Their call is a piping hip. Their song is a short, fast, rich warble with distinct pauses and phrases.
